Client Stories
Gloria
Gloria is an 86 year old retired interior designer from New York. In December of 2008 her passion for living in her condo in the heart of Queen Anne, dinning at the local restaurants, and going to Pilates classes all came to a screeching halt. Gloria had a stroke. She was paralyzed on the right side of her body and was forced to use a wheelchair.
Her committed family and caregiver, Gabrielle were determined to help her return home. After contacting a couple of contractors, her daughter in law learned of the services offered by AdaptABLE for LIFE and requested a consult to gain more clarity on how her Mom and Gabrielle would get around the house before they proceeded with the remodeling projects recommended by the design build contractors.
Dorin
Dorin is an 85 year old retired fashion marketer, avid hiker, and co-owner of her husband’s interior design business. Beginning last year in 2008 Dorin fell and broke her wrist. It was at this time her family realized the extent of her dementia and how she now needed help to live in her home safely. AdaptABLE for LIFE was able to provide home modifications to assist her in safely getting around the house and ongoing wellness exercises to build her balance and thinking skills. Supporting Dorin, her family, and caregivers during life’s transitions that have ensued – finding a wheelchair accessible new home, recovering from a stroke, and then helping transition to a nursing facility when Dorin needed more assistance than that of one caregiver.
“Your careful attention you give my Mom exceeds expectation. We appreciate the effective way you communicate with Mom and how you have helped me to adopt better communication styles with Mom. I feel like I couldn’t be handling all this without you.”
- Christine M.
Peggy
Peggy is a 67 year old retired rehabilitation counselor who experienced paralysis on the right side of her body due to cerebral vasculitis. Her husband was determined to take her home and make it wheelchair accessible. AdaptABLE for LIFE was asked to join the remodeling team consisting of builder, architect, and interior designer who was also Peggy’s daughter. AdaptABLE for LIFE completed a client and environmental assessment, provided a product finish specification list for self-care equipment and accessories, construction site visits, supported the bid process for obtaining quotes and vendors for specialty equipment installation, and coordinated in home care services.
“Your practical and expert advise on materials and resources made remodeling the bathroom and setting up in home care much easier for not only my parents but for me as well.”
- Kat F.
Jim
Jim is living with multiple systems atrophy and is still trying to work, enjoy life, and live in his home of 20 years. He and his wife requested a consult from AdaptABLE for LIFE after having had a few contractors report that a ramp was not an option to enter his home in a wheelchair. They reported that a vertical platform lift was the solution to transport him 120” from the ground to the second story deck into the house. AdaptABLE for LIFE completed an environmental assessment, a product specification list of self-care items, a list of community resources and contractors, a ramp scape design, and a wheelchair simulator.
